How much does a technician earn?
State-certified technicians (staatlich geprüfter Techniker) plan, calculate and steer technical processes – in design, manufacturing, maintenance, quality or project work, depending on the specialisation (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, construction). The path builds on completed dual vocational training, work experience and technician further training at a technical college (full-time or part-time). Gross pay depends on region, collective agreements, specialisation, company size and responsibility. As a guide, practising technicians in Germany in 2026 often earn about €4,100–€4,900 gross per month; in the preceding dual vocational training around €1,000–€1,340 is typical.

Guide figures as of 2026. The apprenticeship column refers to dual vocational training before the technician qualification; qualified means practising state-certified technicians. Actual pay depends on specialisation, collective agreements, employer, region, project and leadership responsibility and experience and is not a guarantee.

Job and everyday work
A technician combines specialist knowledge with planning and implementation: drafting technical specifications, optimising processes, analysing faults and supporting teams or projects. Everyday work includes drawings and calculations, coordination with design, production and customers, and documentation – often under deadline pressure with clear quality and safety requirements.
- Plan, calculate and document technical tasks – from design and manufacturing to maintenance and quality.
- Analyse processes and plant, propose improvements and align changes with design, production or service.
- Narrow down faults and deviations, evaluate test and measurement data and justify solutions technically.
- Create or review drawings, parts lists, work and test plans; comply with standards and regulations.
- Guide skilled workers, consider schedules and resources and communicate with customers or internal stakeholders.
- Observe occupational safety and operating instructions; depending on the role: office, shop floor, site or field service.
